Johan van der Merwe - Apollo Auctions

South African Institute of Auctioneers (SAIA) member, Apollo Auctions, is steadily building a reputation as a top performer in the Gauteng region where it specialises mainly in property sales.

Led by Johan van der Merwe, the Garsfontein-based company has performed consistently well since its inception. Johan says the journey into auctioneering began by chance when a company needed an auctioneer. His interest was piqued and it led him to pursue formal auctioneering training. Soon after, he began conducting auctions for the company marking the start of a fulfilling career.

Johan’s passion for auctioneering eventually drove him to start his own company in 2008. “There have been plenty of highs and unfortunately some lows due to unforeseen market conditions. Nevertheless, it has been a good journey and well worthwhile.”

As with many businesses, Apollo Auctions has faced its share of challenges, particularly navigating tough market conditions. Johan points out that one of the hurdles is managing sellers' expectations when they exceed actual market prices. He also notes the difficulties that arise from estate agents undermining exclusive mandates by approaching sellers directly. Despite these challenges, Johan’s deep love for the job, especially the excitement and energy of auction day, keeps him motivated.

Apollo Auctions specialises in the auctioning of property and loose assets—with the exception of livestock. Johan and his team operate primarily within Gauteng and surrounding areas, offering top-tier auction services to clients.

As a forward-thinking entrepreneur, Johan has his sights set on expansion. "I want to appoint brokers in different regions," he explains, underscoring his plans to extend the company’s reach.

“Our greatest achievement to date is building and maintaining a very good reputation in the industry based on service, performance and trust," says Johan.
