Philip Theron - Mogale Auctioneers
We’ve said it before – we get a thrill out of dealing with members who have been in the industry for 30 or 40 years, having a lifetime of expertise to pass on to the next generation of Auctioneers. However, there is something so special about dealing with that new generation. We love hearing about young people stepping into the industry and carrying on the legacy of those who have gone before.
Philip Theron of Mogale Auctioneers took over his father’s dormant auctioneering business after leaving school 12 years ago. “I always knew auctioneering is the career for me, I would say my biggest inspiration is my dad. He taught all that I know today.”. Philip then took that experience that he had gained from his father over the years to create his own business and career.
“I decided to start my own auctioneering business when I was fresh out of school – having an auctioneering background with my dad made it a much easier decision. I knew I wanted to carry on the legacy by continuing what he did years ago. The journey has been amazing, I have met so many people who have ended up being wonderful business partners and friends,” Philip stated.
His company, Mogale Auctioneers, specialises in exclusive furniture, appliances, electronics, agricultural equipment, construction, earthmoving, industrial machinery and, most recently, properties. Their Head Office is based in Krugersdorp, but they run auctions on a nationwide scale.
However, it wasn’t all rosy. Philip was discouraged from joining the auctioneering industry by his high school teachers. “In high school, teachers told me I was not suited for the job because I had a slight speech impediment. I was constantly trying to prove myself, but my confidence grew and so did my career, my achievements and my business.”
Philip knew what he wanted, regardless of the nay-sayers. Immediately after school, he attended the SA College of Auctioneering with Hedley Harris and never looked back. And it appears it was the right choice. “[Over the last 12 years] Auctioneering has been so kind to me, it’s a great career and most rewarding to build up my business bit by bit, auction by auction. [My favourite part is] to see where we came from – a small business with 20 registrations to a well-known business with 200 registered buyers on each auction.”
Philip credits his father as his biggest mentor. “I have always aspired to be just like my father, he is a business savvy guy. I hope to become as great a businessman and mentor to my sons as he is to me daily,” he fondly said.
When asked about the company’s biggest accomplishment thus far, Philip said; “I would say expanding our premises, where we can offer a bigger selection of services. We moved to our bigger, better premises in 2019, where we now offer storage solutions to liquidators and attorneys.”.
They now have four premises situated in and around Krugersdorp. Philip says that they do have plans to expand their business even more, having recently expanded into property auctions. But he says they won’t stop there. “Think auction, think Mogale”.
We are proud to have Philip and Mogale as members of SAIA, and we look forward to seeing Philip take the company to new and bigger heights!
