Hedley Harris - Hedley Harris Auctioneers
We love hearing about Auctioneers who are so passionate for the Industry, they take it one step further than just being an Auctioneer. Hedley Harris took his career a few steps forward and started the South African College of Auctioneering in 1988, training others to become fully-fledged Auctioneers.
Hedley did his own training at Worldwide College of Auctioneering in 1985 and has been involved in the Auctioneering Industry for 37 years. When asked what inspired him to start his own business, he stated “why take one person’s offer when you can have two or more bidding.”
It’s this kind of go-getter attitude that has brought Hedley and S.A. College of Auctioneering their success. Hedley credits the Worldwide College of Auctioneering as his mentor and biggest inspiration. He also loves people and entertaining people, which is his favourite part about being an Auctioneer.
Although there have been some challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which Hedley says has been “a big challenge,”, he still describes the journey as wonderful “meeting lots of people”.
While Hedley has focussed more on training auctioneers, his business has plans to expand – they have become BEE compliant and would like to become SETA members.
The company, which operates on a national scale, are proud of the auctioneering they have for over 10 years for ABSA, as well as MFC, Wesbank and Eskom.
In many of our previous ‘Meet our Member’ articles, members have stated that they received their qualifications from the S.A. Auctioneering College. This just goes to show the wonderful impact Hedley Harris and his company have had on the Auctioneering Industry. We are proud to have Hedley as a member of SAIA, and look forward to many more years of partnership, as well as welcoming many more of his graduates to SAIA.
